The Election Commission of India has officially declared the schedule for the much-anticipated Lok Sabha elections of 2024. In a press conference held on Saturday, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced that the elections will be conducted in seven phases, with polling commencing on April 19 and concluding on June 1. The results of the elections, encompassing all constituencies, will be announced on June 4.



Key Highlights:

  • Polling Phases: The elections will be held in seven phases, starting from April 19, followed by subsequent phases on April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1.
  • Number of Voters: Approximately 96.8 crore individuals are eligible to exercise their right to vote across over 12 lakh polling stations.
  • Number of Lok Sabha Seats: There are a total of 543 Lok Sabha seats, with an additional seat in Outer Manipur, bringing the tally to 544 due to elections being held in two phases in that constituency.
  • Model Code of Conduct: With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has been implemented nationwide to ensure fair and transparent elections.
  • Innovations in Voting: For the first time in Lok Sabha elections, voters aged above 85 years and those with more than 40% disability will have the option to cast their votes from home.
  • Bypolls: Several bypolls are scheduled alongside the Lok Sabha elections, including seats in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, and other states.
